16-year-old arrested; deliberate capturing with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass college capturing that would have included a bombing at Berkeley High College, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division mentioned in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing damaging gadget supplies and threatening to commit a criminal offense which can result in dying or great bodily damage.

Police mentioned they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teen was a scholar at Berkeley High College.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they found parts to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and digital gadgets that might be used to create extra weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"Faculty safety remains a excessive precedence for the division," police stated in a statement. 

Particulars on whom the teen was making an attempt to recruit were not disclosed. Police said this case remains below investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens informed the varsity's neighborhood that the district was in close contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon parts, the district relied on police experience to assess any potential ongoing danger to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this period, we alerted our administrative and safety staff about this investigation and, as is our commonplace follow, maintained close contact with our BPD School Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley High College campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation interval, we were assured that this individual did not pose a right away menace to the Berkeley Excessive College group."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district might pursue disciplinary motion in opposition to the student.
