16-year-old arrested; planned shooting with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass school shooting that might have included a bombing at Berkeley High School, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division said in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no faculty that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive machine materials and threatening to commit a criminal offense which is able to lead to dying or nice bodily damage.

Police stated they acquired a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a student at Berkeley Excessive College.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they found elements to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and electronic objects that could be used to create additional weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

Particulars on whom the teenager was making an attempt to recruit weren't disclosed. Police stated this case remains underneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens told the school's neighborhood that the district was in shut contact with police throughout this investigation.

"Throughout the investigation period, we have been assured that this individual didn't pose a direct risk to the Berkeley High College neighborhood."
